1981 Porsche 928 S

The Porsche 928 was a luxury front engine V8 grand tourer produced between 1978 and 1995. It was believed that it would have a wider appeal than the flagship 911 and thus was intended to replace it. Porsche executives believed the 911 was reaching the limit of its potential and that the future of the company would lie in grand tourers with “normal” engines in the front rather than “silly” sports cars with engines hanging over the rear wheels.

The project commenced in 1971 as ordered by Ferdinand Porsche and resulted in the first design for Porsche that started on a blank piece of paper. The 928 eventually debuted at the 1977 Geneva motor show and went on sale later that year as a 1978 model. The 928 was expensive and the front engine design with water cooling put many of the Porsche purists off. A range of engines featured in the 928 over its 18-year production run. Due to the oil crisis in the 70s, the 928 was initially released with a low power 4.5L V8 engine. This engine then evolved into a more powerful 4.7L and eventually a 5.0L V8 engine towards the end of the 928 era.

The above car is a 1981 928 S with the sought after manual gearbox.   The car is magnificent in Weinrot metallic with brown and beige pasha interior. The 928 S of 1981 was the first 928 to feature the 4.7L engine. Power output was rated at 221 kw and 400 nm of torque. This enabled the 928 to sprint to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and go on to a top speed of 255 km/h.
