1968 Valiant Barracuda
The Chrysler Valiant was sold by Chrysler Australia between 1962 and 1981. The first cars were Plymouth Valiants from America, assembled and rebadged in Australia. From the second-generation cars, launched in 1963, the Valiant was fully manufactured in Australia. It was sold locally and exported to New Zealand and South Africa.
Automotive trends in America in the early sixties had automakers looking at compact sporty cars. For Chrysler, the Valiant was the natural choice to use as a basis to develop their car. Ford’s Mustang gave this type of vehicle its common “pony car” nickname, but Chrysler beat Ford to the market by two weeks when they launched the Barracuda on the 1st of April 1964. The Barracuda used the Valliant’s bonnet, headlamp bezels, windshield, vent windows, quarter panels and bumpers; all other sheet metal and glass was new. The engine used in the Barracuda was the 3,7L “slant-6” with some two and four-barrel versions of the 4,5L V8 engine also available. There was also a very rare 6.3L “Big Block” V8 available with the Formula S package.
This specific car is a 1968 Barracuda with the slant-6-cylinder engine. It is a two-owner car with 92 000 miles on the odometer. The car has had a blow over some years ago but apart from that it is completely original. Finished in silver with black interior this car is a pleasure to drive and a real head turner! A great opportunity to own a magnificent “pony car” from the sixties!
