1959 Chevrolet Apache Pick-Up
The Chevrolet Task Force was a light and medium duty truck series introduced by Chevrolet in 1955. It was there first major redesign since 1947. These trucks were sold with various minor changes over the years. It was only from 1958 that the series was renamed Apache but to this day even the earlier models are referred to as “Apache”.
This specific example is a 1959 car that has had some work done over the years, but it has been well preserved and is mostly original! The low compression in-line 3.85 L 6-cylinder engine has been retained, along with the original 3-speed manual gearbox. The gearbox is column shift and is often referred to as “three on a tree”. Manual steering and manual brakes were also retained.
Moderate modifications were made to enhance and improve the car. These include
- Front brakes upgrade to disc brakes
- Ford Ranger rear axle with 3.54 diff ratio, allowing higher cruising speed and better economy
- Electronic ignition system
- Seat belts were fitted
- A modern, spin-on oil filter was fitted
- A locally produced external sun visor was fitted.
This pick-up is beautiful and is an absolute joy to drive. It is robust and reliable and has an original American pick-up look and feel combined with a very authentic drive!
